In the game industry news today we learned id Software has been bought by ZeniMax.

Recently it has seemed like the video game industry is going the way of Hollywood—a few big studios putting out the bulk of the work.

But this sale of id Software shows that small publishers will continue to be powerful in the industry. And if I know id, having worked on many of their projects, they are protecting their intellectual property by this sale.

Because ZeniMax is not Activision Blizzard or EA, id is in a far more powerful position to dictate terms of game release than they have been. This is good news for those of us interested in high quality video games.
